God forbid voters should vote their pocketbooks...don't they realize their social duty to sacrifice their hard earned money for whatever flatulent socialist fantasy some academic might come up with? Why should individuals and businesses vote against the massive tax increases built into the program?

The "ad campaign" theory about why the voted against it is comforting I suppose. I find that liberals will reach for the most outlandish reasons for why their agendas or candidates lose elections, avoiding at all costs the simple concept that maybe the voters just don't like their ideas.

Don't worry, the single-payer folks will return again and again until they win. Having the State providing medical care for all voters is the Holy Grail of the Left. No other single item of their agenda will give them as much control over the individual citizen as this would. Can you think of any activity or issue that could not somehow be made into a health issue? What you eat, what you wear, where you live, what you drive? Almost any restriction could be justified by pointing out that the government pays your health bills.
