Consumers are fine, but you can't support them by simply diverting wealth from the producers.
As far as manufacturing goes, at its peak in 1999, Microsoft was worth on the close order of $500 billion, and it has produced nothing physical but a series of specialized patterns of ones and zeros. As I keep telling others here, it ain't 1930 anymore.
There's a lot of peaks and valleys that have to be worked out of an international marketplace yet, but given free trade and time, they will be.
