With friends like these, Saddam looks like just another fall guy for our bad consciences.
Well, sure, we subsidize the Turks! They've only razed 75% of the number of Kurdish villages that Saddam has! In the name of the 25% excess, we declare him our target. In the name of their comparative restraint, we declare the Turks our valued and esteemed ally.
That, and they let us point missiles at the USSR from their territory a while ago. Which we quietly withdrew after Khruschev (with considerably more fanfare) withdrew Soviet missiles from Cuba. I remember thinking we were all going to die. I was 7. Every day since then has been a kind of jaded surprise that we aren't all dead yet. How old were you?
What I want to know is, what is the standard of villainy? Is it muder, rape and torture, or is it doing all those things and not being tools of US foreign policy?
Do we stand for justice, or do we stand for just us?
Regards--
Mary Anne

Meanwhile, the US is offering the Turks *how* much in valuable merchandise and cash prizes?
