In my universe Johnson bowed out due to total disgust with the war by ALL of this country, not the small percentage of protestors that took to the streets.
Those protestors did nothing to alter mainstream public opinion. In fact it is possible that they lengthened the war by disgusting the mainstream by their treatment of Vets. It was the utterly stupid conduct of the war that swung the pendulum.
