The public has a right to know...
but not necessarily the need (or right) to know something immediately. Balancing the public's right to know is the military necessity to protect operational security and safeguard lives. "Loose lips sink ships" and all that.
In this country, the military is subordinate to the civilian authorities. It has to be this way, although some military people like McArthur have forgotten it from time to time.
