Re: Iraqi WMD's : Still no smoking gun

"If we don't find WMD, then we will look like such thugs that no one will take US foreign policy seriously for the next two decades. I have my fingers crossed that we will find WMD... Not that I think this war was justifiable under any means, but just in sheer terror about what damage the failure will couse our country."

You are still failing to understand why we invaded Iraq. It's because Saddam refused comply with '91 cease fire agreement. Saddam was suppose to declare all WMD, then inspectors were suppose to verify that it was an accurate declaration, destroy these weapons, then monitor any remaining WMD capability (assuming it was dual use type). Saddam never *really* got to the point of declaring all of his WMD. He claimed to have made this declaration (a number of times), but the weapons inspectors' job is certify that this declaration is accurate. Because of Saddam unwilling to fully cooperate with the inspectors, they could not get to this point. Therefore, it's not because Saddam had WMD, it's because he did not allow inspectors to do their job- fully cooperate. Now, it seems likely that Saddam had WMD that he did not want to disclose- but it's his refusal to fully cooperate which was the reason we invaded Iraq.
Now, if we don't find WMD, and we don't find a terrorist connection, and we don't find that Saddam regime was oppressive, then it would an embarassment to the President Bush (and the CIA)- if any of these are untrue. Now, if there is only minor WMD, and some terrorist connections [but not a worldwide network] it would still be an embarassment. Plus a MAJOR factor is what kind of new regime, we install. If the new regime results in the region being more unstable, then we are going to lose a lot of trust from the Arab countries. Plus the Arab countries are expecting some serious progress with Israel & Palestine agreements. It's *expected* that Iraq might be somewhat unstable for next couple years, but there should be serious steps toward improvement- at this point in time, I expect it will be *much* better than this.
