The security council itself has become a joke, so let it wallow in its own worthlessness.
Some idealists will take it seriously, some will attempt to abuse its percieved power, and the US can pretty much ignore it except when it benefits the US to vest more power in the UN.
If the US has to take actions to protect its interests without Security Council support then so be it. If the Security council goes along for the ride in support of US interests then that is ok too.
Any multinational body is going to have problems similair to the UN when it comes to dealing with the likes of Sadam Hussain.
He was a master at playing all the sides of an issue...giving a few key UN Member states a carat or two to get what he wanted. The French and Russians sold out their principles for money. That could happen again in the future with Canada, Mexico, or any other country...Even the US is capable of such antics if we are capable of electing another Clinton.
So unfortunatly there is no quick fix. Other than to treat well those who are with us, and stick-it to those who have gone against us: We don't need to appologize for looking out for our own interests. And we certainly don't need to apologize for doing what we believe to be morally correct. We don't need a pat on the back from the UN. But doesn't mean that the UN can't serve some useful purpose.

I would agree to keep the UN, but marginalize it
