Compassion that doesn't cost someone a penny is what proxy "compassion" is.
Compare somebody marching in the streets for "universal health care" versus, say, Mother Teresa. One is out an afternoon, and maybe the cost of a sign, and considers himself the height of compassion and virtue. The other spent her whole life, and probably still considered herself unworthy.
You'd think someone who volunteers in a hospice would have a better grasp of the differences.
