What's the hardware like?

If you're not burnt out yet, you could try removing all the optional hardware--network card, USB, SCSI, audio, modem, etc., if any--to start with an absolute minimal system. CPU, memory, hard drive, video controller, and attached peripherals like the keyboard and mouse and monitor. See if you can load the OS into the minimal system.

If it works, you could then try adding stuff one at a time. Add a card, and install its associated drivers. You'll reach a point where it all falls apart again, but at least you'll know exactly what causes the problem. If you can get by without that piece, you can get a working system.

If your hardware will support it, you might consider an upgrade to Windows 2000 or XP (a.k.a. "Windows 5"). Win5 is much more stable than the 9x series, and installation of drivers is easier and cleaner. It should recover better from a problem with one driver, so that you can keep working around it.

One potential gotch in an upgrade is that you may not be able to get Win5 drivers for some of your hardware. OTOH, Win5 comes with a vast library of drivers and you rarely need a manufacturer-supplied driver.

This won't be easy. You have my sympathy!
