"Sure. It's easy to explain one feature of the situation. But why no footprints or vehicle tracks? The ground is presumably soft, based on the history of an attempt to create a pond there. Where are the cut saplings (assuming I interpreted the photos correctly, as noted)?"
One fellow could cart, what, 100pounds of saplings on foot. All he would have to do is to get some plastic ties or wire to bundle them.
There are numerous ways to explain the lack of foot-prints. As I'm sure you have noticed that during a walk in the woods, not all ground will leave a discoverable foot-print. Tall spring grass, moss, reeds, pine needle pack, appropriately moist and spring soil- all of these will leave no trace of passage after an hour or so of springing back. Hard, rocky soil, or gravel is the same way.
And a clever woodsman can hide his tracks- I've seen it done!!
Vehicle tracks: the guy walked.
Or, it could be the Yeti ate them all to get rid of the taste of Iraqi WMD...
