When looked at from a perspective of geologic time, the World's current climate is anomalous. The Earth's usual condition is fully tropical, everywhere. Once there were dinosaurs in Antarctica.
Currently, we are in an interglacial phase of a million-year-old ice age.
Question: What are the dominating factors behind the changes in Earth's climate?
Answer: Absolutely nobody knows. There are several suspects.
1. The variability of the Sun's output.
2. The Earth's orbital parameters.
3. The roving positions of the Earth's continents.
4. The effects of life on the atmosphere and seas; such as oxygen generation, carbon dioxide removal, albedo effects, erosion effects, etc. This includes the effects of humankind.
5. The unknown: the big one. What has been left off the list?
The truth is certainly a combination of all of the above. But what is it?
