I'm still waiting.
Length gives range. Composition indicates strength. Strength gives parrying ability, in the quarterstaff sense that Fox mentioned.
I had assumed, silly me, the shovel's business end to be that of an ordinary garden shovel, but Davin also has a point: Is it a spade? I sharpen mine. Is it a standard snow shovel? Is it a coal shovel? I have two of those for snow. One is aluminum and the other is plastic with a wooden handle. I wouldn't choose either of those in a fight to the death unless my opponent was a snowman. Is it an entrenching tool? The handle on one of them folds, and is very short.
The trouble with the choice is that you have chosen one item with an extremely wide definition and the other with a very specific one. Baseball bats are a known quantity. Their specifications are regulated to a fare-thee-well. Ask Sammy Sosa.
