Also recommended reading: Peter Beagle's "Lila the Werewolf." Heck, ANYTHING by Peter Beagle. His "Last Unicorn" occupied the top slot in my fantasy hit parade until I read "Princess Bride." Later I discovered Terry Pratchett, and gave up on having a top slot.
