"Frankly, as long as people are left to do their jobs, raise their families, and are protected from the really bad stuff, most folks could care less about politics, philosophy, and the Deep Questions. Experience and common sense are usually enough, if nothing rocks the boat. "
The boat has never not been rocking. The stady-state boat is the fairy tale.
The ones who are trying to tell me that the boat isn't rocking are the ones who unnerve me, and the ones who try to tell me how to make it stop rocking are the ones I run away from as fast as I can.

I know where you are coming from, Tom, you are an Engineer, it dribbles out of the screen even when you don't tout it. I wear a (Software) engineers hat at least half the day, and I know the desire to boil the complexities down to find the simple kernal that works. I know the innate distrust of complex answers, as they are the ones that usually induce MASSIVE failures.
One person once said that engineering is the discipline of noise reduction. I think he had a point.
The perspective and tool box of the engineer is a great one, but the tools don't always apply elsewhere.
