sounds like a job for xp home to me
The biggest difference from where I sit is that Pro (or win2k) is required to run all the various .NET development tools...they apparently won't run under xp home. But for non-developers, Home seems to be a pretty good deal. My wife uses the Home version, and even does some VB development under it, and swears by it.
