re: Productivity of a country

"Output per person employed in the United States last year was $US60,728 ($95,065), the report said. Belgium, the highest-scoring European Union member, had $US54,333.

And yet, we're a socialist country, according to you."

I doubt Tom *really* cares about whether you're are socialist. As they say, all politics is local. Rather what concerns him is the current extent in which the US is socialist, and the apparent constant grinding trend towards becoming more socialist. The "Republican Revolution" hasn't really stopped this trend, but rather has put a couple dents in it, and has slowed it down a bit for a few years.
Government bureaucracies simply had a "natural" tendency to grow and become bloated. In business at least, this bureaucratic bloat has to deal with economic realities.
The good news for America is that the US has fairly independent states, and when these states become bloated, as say California, they reach a breaking point and might actually take steps to correct this- which may also lead to other states reforming and this filtering up to the Federal level.
