Rich pilgrims

Rich deacons, well off fundamentalists that ride around in wagons. Sure there are exceptions. Many of them (and I'm primarily talking about southern variety I am familiar with) live a lot more secular than they talk. Some of them enjoy their little power positions. Some are rich and demented like OBL and some of the RTL nuts.

If you are, as I seem to recall, an atheist, I'm not sure what you have in mind when you call those Drs., Lawyers and Accountants fundamentalists. You obviously put Ashcroft in that category but in spite of his irritating religious quirks, I doubt he would pass muster with a real hard shell Baptist. There are probably not a million souls in the USA that would pass the Pearly Gates by 19th century standards.

I recently heard a lady complain about her kid's football practice being on Wednesday because that's a church day. The conversation went bad and the next thing you know she was throwing out four letter words like a drunken sailor. People like that are not really leading a fundamentalist life. Even the pentecostals that once required women to wear uncut hair and no make up have abandoned that rule.

We could argue endlessly about what is or is not a fundamentalist life vs a secular life but it is my opinion that to keep a mass of humanity subjegated to any kind of dogma you have to keep them poor, ignorant and convinced that their best day in this world will be the day they leave it.
