I can find a whole lot of people, largely in academia and Hollywood, who would cheerfully gush for hours at the wonderful things Castro has done for his nation. The literacy rate figures prominently, as does the fact that everyone gets free medical care. Worth every penny, too.
There was quite a flap on this site over the ALA feting representatives of the official Cuban library system when they were jailing dissident librarians.
As for our government, people in Congress who have gushed at various levels about the socialist paradise down south include Barney Frank, Jim McGovern, Julian Dixon, James McDermott, Charles Rangel, Maxine Waters, and others. A good 50 members of Congress are socialist, which seems to bother people not at all.
That being said, I agree that the embargo is not only not that effective, but inconsistent with the way we have treated other communist nations.
