The article clearly states the Altacama soil has oxidative properties while life bearing soils have reducing properties. This exposes the fallacy of Levin and BD's argument that because we do't know what the oxidant on Mars is we can't conclude its not life or worse yet arguments basd on how it can't be one specific oxidant indicate it must be life instead. Chemical analysis can tell a soil is oxidizing even if the oxidant can't be determined.
