P.S.

A lot of grief is caused because people try to combine the concepts of "moral" and "legal." The conservatives often think that things that are immoral ought to be against the law. The progressives make the opposite error, and assume that if something is legal, it must therefore be immune to any moral judgment.

In point of fact, the legal system is intended to protect against people doing bad things to other people. It really should have no other jurisdiction. It is perfectly consistent to have something be legal, yet be against someone's moral code. The opposite case is a bit more rare.

"Render unto Caesar."

This simplifies a lot of thorny issues.

Things that can be judged immoral or wrong but should not be illegal are things like gay marriage, individual drug use, or suicide. None of these swing a fist where someone else's nose is, and the law really shouldn't enter into it.

Abortion is tricky. If one assumes you are dealing with a "product of conception," it goes one way. If it is a baby it goes the other. I have my own opinions, but they are not based on anything scientifically quantifiable.

IMO, a good "Solomon" compromise on this would be to make first trimester abortion legal, and third trimester illegal, and figure out where to draw the line in between, maybe on a case-by-case basis. At the state level, not Federal.

Naturally, neither the Left nor the Right are going to go for this, each seeing it as a major loss of territory. So, there it is.
