If they're making political hay out of this, I don't really care. It makes no difference that he's a republican. What he said was despicable.
That said, it's no different than Obama saying "you didn't build that". In both cases they need to own their words.
I'm not sure where this faction of the GOP came from or how they made it into the mainstream. But I think they'll drive moderates to the democrats.
