The businessman would have us believe he and he alone brings civilization to the wilderness, that he and he alone has the intelligence, courage, creativity and ambition to make things happen. The implication, of course, is that everyone who isn't a businessman is stupid, cowardly, unimaginative and lazy. In other words, they deserve to be wage slaves, and they should be properly grateful to the noblesse oblige of the Master. Bullshit.
The businessman depends on the society, its stability and protection and the contributions and skills of its other members. He needs the roads and schools and the courts and the army, too. He draws on history and his workers, he owes them, he even owes geography, much of his success is built on the riches and resources of the earth. What he contributes is important: management, investment, coordination, leadership, no one denigrates it, but it is not the only thing. We are a society, a tribe, a collective, we are apes, not Great Whites swimming alone.
Even Isaac Newton stood on the shoulders of giants, and on the shoulders of midgets, too. And the worker contributes not just raw brute strength, he also contributes skills and intelligence that makes the enterprise possible. Its about time these blow-dried corporate wimps showed them some respect.
As for the guys that built the railroads, at least they left us some railroads. What have those financial paper shufflers and bankers on Wall Street left us? They are not producers, they are not even predators. They are parasites.
They are middlemen, they skim off the top, they suck the blood out of workers, and they suck the blood out of real businessmen who are actually running real businesses in a real market, selling real stuff and meeting real payrolls. Equity management, my ass. What magnificent horseshit.
Liz Warren is right.
