It's unprofessional.
Everytime I see these boards degrade into a name calling fest - I cringe. It reflects poorly on the posters and the HZ. I realize this is a very informal board, but when posters here hurl the nasty remarks it completely detracts from the potential of the board.
The space board used to be much more active. These flames and the bickering drive people away. There's only so many times one can reread essentially the same ol' flame wars and then it gets old real fast.
In my opinion one need not answer someone whom one thinks is not really interested in your reply but is posting for some other purpose. The board would be spared the flames and the wasted bandwidth. If Johannes posts something objectionable, no one needs to reply, certainly not more than once to provide any correct information.
Yes, it takes a certain amount of willpower to resist flaming someone whom one finds annoying or irritating. Before Justin left, these boards were a bit tighter in the moderation. To make up for this we all have to be a bit more selective in who we choose to answer or reply to. In the old days Justin would have picked up half of these threads and moved them over to flame where they belong.
Basically both you and R.L. need to lay off the caffeinated beverages or put a string around your finger to remember to use the flame board when the compulsive urge to lambaste strikes. It'll make the space board much more enjoyable for all. You guys let Johannes rile you all up - and for what? If I let everyone who has a hopelessly confused pet theory rile me up, I'd be irritated all day and all night. You should see some of the e-mails I've received over the years. One learns to ignore that which one completely disagrees with. Many folks here do that well on these boards. Larry J, Raoul, Delbert, Tom, Nick and others consistently resist temptation to post flames unless severely provoked.
Heck I often rile people up (sometimes intentionally too ;-) yet it's great to see the self-restraint in action.
Even this thread is now just wasted bandwidth.
