Poi sucks. 'Nuff said.

I have come to the conclusion that the vast majority of "native" or "ethnic" foods fall into one of two categories:

1) Things you have to eat because nothing else will grow or can be found there.

2) Things you have to eat because, while you can grow, hunt for, or find great food, your kings, dukes, rulers, tribal leaders, owners, masters, bosses, or what have you take all the good parts and leave you with the crap they don't want to eat. Peasant food.

Go over all the famous ethnic foods you can think of, and see for yourself. Do you really think Southern blacks preferred pig jowls, feet, and greens picked from the swamps? The people up in the big house were eating the pork chops. And Asian food is pretty much anything that can't outrun you and doesn't kill you on the spot. Sushi? Wood or charcoal for cooking was a scarce commodity in Japan.

And oh, yeah. I'm sure Scotsmen would MUCH rather eat haggis than lamb chops. The lord of the manor was eating the lamb chops.

At some point, you get used to it, or even like it.

Necessity is the mother of invention. Desperation is the father of exotic gourmet foods.

Hey, it's a theory, but it holds up.
