By the year 2200 (hopefully sooner) separatist groups will have begun moving out into the solar system in order to create their own societies. In time, as technology allows, some of these groups will leave this system all together to build a new home among the stars. Some will fail while others will succeed, but in the end this process is unstoppable. Like the New World, space will be settled and colonized by the adventurers, criminals, prophets, and separatists. With each group looking for a clean slate and their own idea of Utopia.
Mars will be a good starting point for these groups of latter day Mormons as governments will probably be unwilling to let them have the nuclear technology required for interstellar vessels. By setting up outposts on Mars, they will be able to mine and refine the necessary ores to build such craft on their own. A great deal of time will be required to setup such infrastructure, but considering that the vast majority of people will more than likely be Earthbound for the next several centuries, they shouldn't raise too many concerns. To the majority of the population, these space "kooks" will be out of sight and out of mind. Largely forgotten about on the edges of the solar system.
Lee, (May they find what they're looking for)
Space/Science » in reply to It would take a religous movement. Like the quakers, a religous sect on Earth would be seeking a new place for just "them"
That is the future of space travel.
