And for the links to be "growing" they must have existed previously.

How could religion have been a barrier between Iraq and Al Qaeda before the war... and now it's not?

Religion hasn't changed, only the proximity of the US.

IMO it says it is more likely that Iraq and Al Qeada have worked together in the past against a common enemy...us.
