Isn't CH4 production on Mars, yesterday's news?

Now that we know there is abundant ice on Mars, why go to the effort to produce CH4? Just produce hydrogen and oxygen through electrolysis of water. The only issue now is to find a landing site where the ice is exposed on the surface.
