re: Seeing in Stereo

Last night I dummied up a couple of images side-by-side, and spent an hour giving myself a headache trying to see stereo. I used a cardboard sheet in the plane of my nose, various cardboard tubes of varying lengths, tried different distances, tried severely crossing my eyes...and couldn't see anything but two images side-by-side.

I'm starting to think that the big difference between my eyes may make it very difficult for me to make it work. Yet, lots of people testify that they can make stereo out of side-by-side images, so I guess I'll just build the damn thing to spec and hope it works for everybody else. The feedback I'm getting forms an abstract specification: Side-by-side images, ability to swap left and right, ability to vary separation...and everything else is up to the user: crossing the eyes, moving the head in and out, constructing aids from cardboard, basically willing stereo to appear. Anything else? Seems like magic to me...but I'll build it.
