Altamont Pass wind turbines are about 80 kilowatts rated power on average, and from the photo you can see they probably aren't more than 150 feet high, including the blades.
Large modern machines can be up to 150 METERS high (500 feet), and you can always see the blades, they are never spinning so fast as to blur. Birds of prey love to perch on the towers because it gives them a sweeping view of the ground below to look for mice, rabbits, squirrels, etc. There is little chance they will collide with the blades on a big turbine, about the same chance of colliding with the tower itself. And even if they did, collisions are already the primary cause of bird fatalities in nature.
Check out the 28-minute quicktime video "Out of the Blue" from the Danish Wind Industry Association. The video gives an excellent side-by-side visual comparison of the small and the big wind turbines.
