Flame » in reply to An essay on finance capital

Real capitalists.

"But the financial types, those who deal only with money, who don’t even much know or care where or what the money they invest goes or does, are parasites, They get rich by controlling an imaginary commodity totally separated from reality, something that doesn’t exist. These are not businessmen or even merchants. They are vampires, and for as long as there has been capitalism on this planet these gamesters have led us into one Bust, Bubble, Panic or Depression after another. They not businessmen, they have nothing but contempt for real businessmen, who they dismiss as mere small-town carpet salesmen. To borrow money and take a risk and then bust your ass to make and sell a product against stiff competition…that’s only for chumps who don’t know any better. Real capitalists don’t work. Real capitalists don’t even invest their own money, they gamble with the life savings and pension funds or homes of people who do work or own businesses. And they are on salary, win or lose, they get paid; except if they win they get a bigger bonus, usually taxed at a lower rate. For capitalists, small businessmen are no different and little better than employees: chumps."

This is fine and swell to be angry at those who seem to have it easy while they push money around. Banks, Paypal and other financial institutions are filled with people who do work. The tellers work, the security guard works, the bank manager works. At Paypal the computer programmers work and the accountants and management work.

The people you really have a beef with are the ones at the very top, who collect millions, sometimes billions per year, in revenue for merely being a money lender or in Paypal's case, merely a provider for money transfer. The truth is, despite some of these individual's lack of ethics or labor output, they are the beneficiary of the market that rewards an idea. Pierre Omidyar founded Ebay with an idea, and it wasn't even a unique idea. It was just glorified online classifieds. But it connected and the market rewarded him. His labor was marginal for his return.

A true capitalist values competition. If they believe in markets, they understand the value of competition and how it actually creates value.

Unfortunately, for the past sixty years, people emerge from our educational institutions with no understanding of capitalism, merely the notion that you must beat others, cheat and connive to survive. These graduates enter the world of enterprise, not seeking to be capitalists. They merely seek to get rich. They listened to their teachers who told them, "the more math you take the more money you make" and they believed it. So they go out and try to make money by any means possible. What appeals most to them is securing a monopoly. They are monopolists and not capitalists. They don't believe in competition or free markets. They haven't read Rand or give a crap about what she has to say. And they emerge from accounting schools and universities with business degrees all the time.

Any free market is going to have these monopolists trying to push others out. Ebay tried to buy out Craiglsist and has bought dozens of would-be competitors to maintain a monopoly on internet sales. General Electric's CEO buddies up with Obama and his company pays no taxes, set forth the legislation to outlaw the incandescent bulb so they could sell more costly fluorescent bulbs, and being a poster child for corrupt business practices.

So what's the problem? The problem is the self-same government that is supposed to regulate industry, prevent monopolies and protect the markets is bought off by these same monopolists. How many bank mergers have ever been blocked, lately? The fix is in and the government is working hand-in-hand with the would be monopolists who climb into bed with them. So we have corruption that destroys competition, increase inflation, creates monopolies and makes it harder for entrepreneurs to flourish and prosper. These same fat cats bribe politicians to make sure our borders stay open so they can secure under the table wages.

It's farcical. Out of one side of their mouth they talk about raising the minimum wage and then they make sure the farmers, canneries and few factories left can secure illegal, under minimum wage employees. So they can raise the minimum wage all they want, because the real workforce is being acquired at 4 dollars per hour. And when state or local government try to crack down on businesses or illegal immigration they now get slapped down by the Fed - because these folks and their children are the new demographic who will empower the other lazy folks who become politicians and bureaucrats - for the job security, pensions and less competitive workplace.

There is so very little difference between someone like President Obama and the head of Goldmann Sachs, Lloyd Blankfein. Both seek to enrich themselves without doing much work. Both went to Harvard to personally exploit the public gravy train and morality is not something that bothers either man.
