Honestly, I don't know.
I once worked in the banking industry (and for a national bank - I keep going back and forth about whether I should capitalize that). As part of my continuing education I had to take a few of classes on the specifics of banking. The actual history was rarely mentioned. I've forgotten most of the stuff I studied. But parts come back to me when conservatives show particular ignorance of the system.
