its actually worse than that

I live in the state of Idaho. My vote has zero effect on the outcome. Only voters in battleground states can make a difference.

As it is my state hasn't voted for a Democrat since Johnson in 1964. Other than the occasional Democrat for Governor we always vote for Republicans. As a Republican this is usually good news, until I decide it might be time to step off the Elephant for a time. I have no doubt my state will give it's 4 electoral votes to Bush this year, so I this is part of the basis for my apathy. I'll either vote out of habit, or do something new and stay home. Too bad there isn't a none-of-the-above box. That way we could at least send a strong message of distate to the 2 parties.

I think the electoral college makes sense so that we don't get recount after recount fiascos nation wide. However, I wouldn't mind seeing the electoral college being reworked so that it is not a state-by-state winner take all event. Idaho has 4 votes, that means if the vote goes 75% to 25% then only 3 of those votes go to the majority. This way the electoral college more closely resembles the popular vote.
