Space/Science » in reply to Cold fusion update

I hate to seem like a killjoy, but I have heard this song before.

I remember the Fleishmann-Pons debacle.

I remember the follow-ons.

I remember the repeated failure of any thermonuclear reactor to produce more power than it consumes.

Frankly, I remain very dubious for a simple reason: The highest temperatures and pressures that have been produced by chemical explosives during spherical implosion have been unable to generate a single neutron. This was tried for decades before the old AEC gave up the ghost. You just are NOT going to get higher temperatures and pressures from sonoluminescence that you can from a couple of kilograms of RDX-based explosive. It can't be done.

In other words, my skepticism for the feasilbity of practical fusion is undiminished.
