I know what you are trying to say, and how you're trying to define "the Left" across fifty years, and it isn't valid today.

The American Left ain't Roosevelt any more, in case you haven't been keeping track. It ain't even John F. Kennedy. Let's try and keep it current.

While many liberals--including many here--might support military defense of South Korea, Hong Kong, Taiwan, or other outposts of democracy if they are attacked, many others would not.

The hard Left did not support even our attack on Afghanistan. It opposed every aspect of our opposition to communism. The hard Left is also violently opposed to our support of the one single democracy in the entire Middle East, at the same time defending psychotic radical Islamists who think that women are property, homosexuals are for killing, and individual and human rights are dispensed from religious tyrants. The sight of a feminist marching under a Palestinian flag has to be seen to be believed.
