TORTURE AT ABU GRHAIB, by SEYMOUR M. HERSH

"American soldiers brutalized Iraqis. How far up does the responsibility go?"

Unfortunately, responsibility goes all the way up, and all the way down. These things occur in wars, all wars. The only difference between this war and others is that the web is spreading information more openly. We are not dependent upon networks for all of our information. (Once it's already out, they can publicize it. Do you think My Lai was an isolated incident?)

So, whether people like it or not, everyone who was in favor of this war is responsible. All American taxpayers are responsible. All Americans are in some measure responsible.

I'm responsible. I pay taxes, I'm American, and I'm ashamed at how some are used.

And this is why some of us are so vigorously opposed to war as anything except a last, very, very last resort.
