I started keeping a dream journal when I just hit my teens. It was almost like the process of doing that actually increased the frequency and duration of my dreams. In dream time this dream lasted about fifteen minutes. I know there are elements I am forgetting. Some nights I have five or more dreams. As a result, I've had all sorts of crazy dreams.
But don't take my word for it, get a notebook or composition pad and a pencil or pen and put it on your nightstand or nearby your bed within reach. When you awaken you will have a memory of your dream that may only last for ten seconds before it evaporates. You will remember the pad and be able to write down a sentence or two that will act as an "anchor" for the dream in the non-dream world and make it able to be remembered later.
I think we can use our dreams to extract things we need to deal with in our lives. I also know that outside forces can influence us and give us nightmares. They feed on bad dreams and get a "charge" when interfaced with us as we sleep. In some of these spectra, food isn't eaten, rather it's absorbed mind to mind - or more accurately field to field.
I can always tell when one of these dream "parasites" interfaces with me. There is the telltale "jolt" or moment of the dream where they want to generate energy via fear and I even get a bitter taste in my mouth upon awakening that lingers for a moment as a telltale.
I know it sounds crazy, but I have experienced and seen too much to discount it.
