re: listening to critics

Many different critics warned of many, many different things before the war in Iraq. It's not surprising that some warnings were right. A great number of warnings were wrong. A great number of things going on in Iraq right now, nobody predicted. A lot of predictions from different critics were mutually contradictory. In fact, no matter what had happened in Iraq this past year, some critics were going to be right. Naturally, these get the air play.

If you can find one individual critic who predicted the exact course of this war as it is going, please point them out. The rapid, nearly-bloodless military victory. The lack of WMD. The retreat of Iraq's army. No civil war. No starvation. No refugees. No burning oil wells. No Arabic armies pouring over the border. No involvement of Israel. Small groups of insurgents blowing up roads, not Iraqi tanks firing at our forces.

And a casualty count after a year that, while high from some perspectives, would have been eclipsed by almost any single battle in WWII. Including many battles that we lost.

Did anyone predict all of this?

And a considerable amount of this criticism would probably carry a lot more moral authority if it involved any real goals other than defeating Bush in the next election.
