A story:
One of the guys I used to work with is a contractor from India. About 35 years old. Hindu background. Wore a beard.
After Iraq started to heat up, his mother - back in India - ordered him to shave his beard. This was to keep anyone from thinking he was an Arab and harming him. (He complied.)
There have been stories in the news about Arabs subject to murder, bodily harm, threats, vandalism, sacrilige perfromed on their places of worship. They aren't covered much. The stories that get any play at all are the mistaken identity ones. Like the one where the murdered "Arab" turned out to be Hispanic.
From your vantage, this is easy to discount because it does not apply to you. Believe me when I tell you that folks with darker complexions than yours take it very seriously, indeed.
Besides, really really bad things could happen to the Arab-American community, if things went sour. I think that keeping a low profile is exactly the right strategy, for them.
