not sure ..

.. not sure what you're saying in this paragraph -

Back when communism was an argued concept, I had problems with the mantra of "Dialetic Materialism." My view of this concept was as a truncated failure to understand the concepts of Hegelian synthesis. When I would argue this position, I was usually met with "you just don't understand." To me that was not adequate---today the position is "whatever!"

my limited knowledge here is that Hegel was an 'idealist', Marx a 'materialist'. The dialectic is some sort of dynamic between two opposites - the interaction results in the synthesis of something new. With Marx, that meant the 'class struggle' leads to the synthesis of a new society. Whereas with Hegel the process would be more spiritual or somehow 'ideal' .. wouldn't it?

In any case, Marx's materialism meant, of course, atheism, which I don't advocate, and certainly not as a social doctrine. Despite the vicious religious wars and massacres of these days, the fact remains that more people were murdered by atheist regimes - Nazi germany and Stalin's Soviet Union - than anywhere else. I see that as significant
