I didn't read it like any of these responses. It looked to me like the pub was trying to avoid people taking apart the lamps to explain the transit. I suppose you could have people racing around the pub making whooshing noises to illustrate the probes in orbit around Mars, and then complain about science being repressed when they are told to sit down and shut up.
