Decentralization versus economy of scale.

I agree that wind power should be used where available. Photovoltaic power will soon be economical for medium scale use. However, it is a simple fact that resources are where Nature has put them. We don't all live by iron mines to get our iron. We don't all live by oil wells to get our oil. Transportation of major resources like energy has been a fact of life for many years.

Small and medium scale power generation can not compete in price with large Sea Solar Power plants. Will the general public prefer paying two or three times as much for electricity for the privilege of producing it locally? I strongly doubt it.

As far as relying on only a single source for the bulk of our electricity, that is also a fact of life. The CHEAPEST method of production of a given commodity always dominates the marketplace. Since Sea Solar Power will cost a small fraction of what other alternative power systems (or nuclear power) will cost, it will be the big one.

As far as security is concerned, the power failures of recent years have been due largely to the instability of the AC power grid. It is high time to upgrade to a DC power grid, which is inherently more stable. The thing that makes AC grids unstable is the need for synchronization. When load changes drastically, part of the grid tends to go out of phase with the rest, which then causes breakers to pop. DC has no sychronization problem. I am proposing DC for TRANSMISSION only, NOT for DISTRIBUTION of power. Distribution is best handled by AC because it is much easier to change voltage of AC than DC.
