Lobes

I don't fully subscribe to the old belief that localizes personality traits in the right or left lobe of the brain, but I've said before that I think that people pick an idelogy (including religion) that's congenial to their preexisting dispositions. I think it puts the horse and the cart in the proper relationship to talk about liberal and conservative personalities. To generalize:

Conservatives are uncomfortable with ambiguity, and want things to be black and white and settled. They tend to look more to the past than the future because the past is relatively clear and settled (except for arcane disputes among historians), in contrast to the scarily ambiguous shades of grey of the future. The unknown is more a potential threat than a potential opportunity.

Liberals tend to be more comfortable with ambiguity and dissonnance. The existence of multiple cultures in the world isn't necessarily a problem on principle, even if they're inconsistent and contradict one another. Shades of grey are the rule rather than the exception, and it's OK for some questions to be unanswered as yet. Mysteries are not an offense against the Right and Natural Order of Things, and might even lead to something new and novel that upsets the staid old order. Change is Good.

So I think that you're in a reasonable ballpark with your generalizations. As one of those liberal personalities, I think crop circles are a charming mystery that add some spice to the mundane world, and I'm not bothered by the lack of a cut-and-dried answer. I also think that it's arrogant intellectual hubris for people to declare that they know what crop circles "really" are, either way. Unless you're either an alien grasping a foliage burning ray gun, or a human hoaxster who's just mowed a crop circle, you really can't claim to know the answer. (And even then, logically, the two aren't mutually exclusive. Wouldn't it be a delicious irony if it turned out that the hoaxsters jumped on a genuine phenomenon?)

I"m rather enjoying the whole spectacle. Humans can be such entertaining semisapients.
