with two problems that are very difficult, they are based on the basic liberal commitment to individual liberty and eqality of opportunity.
The first is how far should individuals be able to go in exercising their freedom? Many liberals say "victimless crimes" such as prostitution, gambling, pornography, use of controlled substances should not be crimes at all. Others argue these crimes are not victimless. Liberals have great problems trying to separate the area of private freedom from the area of public control.
The second comes from the liberal principal of equal opportunity. The neo-classical liberal say this means that everyone ought to be free to make his way in the world without unfair discrimination. Talent and ability should be the only barriers and anything else should be illegal. The activist-liberal want the government to bring about a more nealy equal distribution of wealth and resources.
The problem of liberals is simply how to reach liberal goals and not violate the rights of others?
These are the kinds of questions liberalism tends people to raise.
