It is very easy to paint conservatives with the fundamental Christian, neo-con brush, attacking the more middle of the roaders for the extreme positions of some.
Thereby, understandably, driving the reasonable, moderate folks with a conservative bent into the arms of the ideologues.
And the True Believers will define liberals as socialist or even communist, a serious lapse of cognitive functioning which demonstrates a lack of understanding of both economic and political systems.
Unfortunately, "our" conservatives on the HZ ARE the neo-cons, and have adopted the fundamental Christian agenda. There really doesn't seem to be any middle-of-the-roaders.
It's just not possible for a discourse with anyone that uninformed, leaving the one with just the option of poking holes in their positions for the fun of it.
