The cemetery at Saint-Laurent-sur-Mer, in France, is American ground. It was ceded to the United States, in perpetuity, by the French government in 1945. We bought it with blood. Lots of it.
So they technically can't deny passports to our own land. Any international lawyer worth his salt could get a sweet world court judgement against France for blockading US citizens from their own land. Diplomatically, it might even be justification for declaring war on France. ;-)
The French have always been rude. In Europe, where smiling is akin to telling the world one is an idiot and not a serious person, the French have taken the stoic face to a new level, complete with the hint of a grimace and a sense that the burdens of the world already are weighted upon their shoulders.
