crappy public art and architecture

the bottom line, which I'll expand, is that individuals and groups should complain to the authorities and especially to the artists themselves, persistently and loudly.

'Geometric shapes' - they're bloody everywhere it seems. What's this obsession with harsh and angular structures? .. Post-modernist or something? - don't know, but the real point is that these dominant tastes etc. are being forced on the public by a certain culture, or ideology, special to the 'art scene' alone.

I know of a large and important public structure (cultural and commercial centre) in this country which I will not name, as it could be vulnerable to terrorism. It covers a large city block and uses a hell of a lot of glass panelling. Looked good to the architects and their clients I guess - but boy is it ugly, right out of place with the rest of hte lovely older architecture of that town. And as I say - I think it's a potential risk. No-one else seems to have said so, though.

In other words: in the 'big picture' (pun, hehe) the aesthetics of art are mainly propagated by elites - academic, commercial and others. We are supposed to ignore our confusion or disconnection and somehow try and force ourselves to accept or like it. (It's actually a bit like muzak in shopping malls, in that way)

As a physics tutor and also 'practioner of the audio arts' I always assume responsibility for getting my message across. Student or audience feedback is absolutely essential for me, to refine my stuff and make it more authentic - meaning, that it must sound good, and make sense, to other people, not just me alone. If someone doesn't 'get' something then I will try harder, since they can't be blamed for not understanding. I think artists and sculptors should be very receptive to the reactions and feelings of their community, and people in their turn can self-educate themselves very well indeed, with public libraries, the internet, multimedia etc.

Here is a fantastic project which I heard about a few years ago -
Roden Crater - boy would I like visit that!
