The problem is, a lot of the stories of valor aren't matching up.

Among those who have joined up with the Swift Boat Veterans are about sixty people who are actually eyewitnesses to Kerry's service. although they served on different boats next to Kerry's, or elsewhere with Kerry. There are a dozen men backing Kerry officially, including most of his actual crewmates on the same boat.

If this many Alabama National Guardsmen--men who served with Bush--had raised doubts about Bush's service, you would have taken it as gospel. So would most Republicans.

There is no plausible way all of these people could be lying. There is no plausible logical reason why the veterans backing Kerry should be any more or less credible than the others. In fact, since Kerry got them off hazardous duty when he left Vietnam, there might be some motivation there.

I am getting most of my information on this case from sources other than O'Neil's book, which I haven't read*. If you look at most of my references, they come from the Kerry camp.

*Of all the people currently deriding the SBV, I wonder how many people actually have read the book, or even looked at the web site. Maybe some of the same people complaining that I had no right to comment on Michael Moore's movie unless I saw it myself.
