You could use that 486 for a router/firewall perhaps...

I've been using Reiser on my root (main directory tree) for almost a year. Rock solid and fast. I'd backup all your necessities and use dos/windows to do a hard (/u) format. Use cfdisk as opposed to fdisk, from your Gentoo boot disk.

One key is to gather all hardware info on your computer and components that you can find. Then use menuconfig (as opposed to genkernel) when that step arrives and strip out alot of the extra baggage that you don't need or won't use.

suggestions for your make.conf:

CHOST="i686-pc-linux-gnu"
CFLAGS="--march=pentium2 -O3 -mmmx -pipes
CXXFLAGS="${CFLAGS}"

The Gentoo docs recomend using -fomit -frame-pointer but it's already implemented at -O1 level. This CFLAGS is at -O3. It takes more time to compile the code with these flags sent to the compiler but it should make for more efficent code.

Are you going to have access to another seperate computer with browser while you build this system?
