I suspect it's one guy in Texas who is politcally connected with the Democratic party and served in the Texas Air National Guard (TANG). My theory is this guy has a grudge against Bush and used his political connections with the Democratic Party to access Dan Rather. Dan Rather's news staff have been researching Bush's TANG military service for years in the hope of finding some dirt on Bush. Apparently Rather has been "telegraphing" to various people exactly what he needed for a knockout punch against Bush. These forged memos were created to meet that specific need and then transmitted to Rather.

Dan Rather is bummed-out big time because he thought he could retire from journalism after single-handedly torpedoing Bush out of the White House (a liberal media stooge's wet dream). To have the instrument for fullfilling that dream but not being able to use it (because it was an obvious forgery) was probably beyond Rather's emotional limitations (a younger man would have tossed the forgeries into the trash).

Rather's error was discovered but his own emotional involvement has prevented him from invoking an escape tactic. This is Rather's last hurrah. This thing will end when the suit's at CBS step in and euthanize Rather or someone on Rather's staff or who obtained an independent copy of the forgeries spills the beans.

To end on a creepy note: Rather was telling people exactly what he needed and someone with the raw military knowledge provided it. However the idiot forger slipped up by creating the forgery on a computer. The idiot could easily have acquired an old typewriter like the common Olympia typewriter mentioned by Killian's ex-secretary and typed the letter on old bond paper. The forgery could have been made undetectable and the election would now be over.

Old documents discovered by anonymous sources outside the National Archives or the Pentagon are no longer believable.
