Politics in West Virginia can get pretty hostile. During the RNC convention, someone shot at a Republican office in the state. Violence is not unheard of there.

A Republican who shows up at a Democrat rally with signs is expressing his First Amendment rights, but he can expect trouble. Bringing his 3 year old daughter into such an environment probably isn't a good idea.

I've read that he has a large family, including 2 sons in the Army (one in Special Forces). If that's true, I suspect that asshat who tore up the sign won't be smiling the next time big brother comes home on leave.
